Appliance Tips

Keeping your appliances in top shape doesn’t just save you money on repairs, it helps your home run more smoothly every day. Here's what our experts recommend.

Stove & Oven

  • Wipe Spills Quickly: Prevent buildup by cleaning spills as soon as the appliance cools.

  • Check Burners: If your gas burner flame is yellow instead of blue, it may need adjustment.

  • Avoid Foil on the Bottom: It can block airflow and cause uneven heating.

Washer

  • Don’t Overload: Washing too many clothes at once strains the motor and shortens its lifespan.

  • Use the right detergent: Use the adequate detergent for your machine and use the right amount.

  • Clean the drum: Not only the drum but the whole machine once a month to increase its life.

  • How to Wash: Wash the drums with vinegar or lemon once a month.

Refrigerator

  • Keep It Clean: Wipe down door seals regularly to prevent leaks and energy loss.

  • Check the Temperature: Set your fridge to 37–40°F and your freezer to 0°F for optimal performance.

  • Vacuum the Coils: Clean condenser coils at least twice a year to improve efficiency.

Dryer

Garbage Disposal

  • Clean the Vent Regularly: Lint doesn’t just build up in the trap—it can clog the vent hose. Clean it every 6–12 months to prevent fire hazards and improve drying efficiency.

  • Check the Exhaust: Make sure the outside vent flap opens freely when the dryer is running. A blocked vent reduces performance and increases energy bills.

  • Avoid Overdrying: Overdrying clothes wastes energy and can damage fabric. Use sensor settings instead of timed cycles whenever possible.

  • Level the Dryer: A dryer that rocks or vibrates too much may be unlevel—adjust the feet to reduce noise and wear.

  • Run Cold Water: Always run cold water before, during, and after using the disposal to help flush food particles through the system.

  • Feed Slowly: Don’t overload it with too much waste at once—feed scraps gradually.

  • Avoid Problem Foods: Never put fibrous foods (like celery, corn husks, or potato peels), coffee grounds, or grease down the disposal they can clog or dull the blades.

  • Freshen Naturally: Drop in ice cubes with a little rock salt to clean the blades, and use citrus peels to keep odors fresh.

  • Reset When Needed: If the motor trips, use the reset button underneath before calling for service.
